Carmen, although at retirement age, continues to work to do her best and support her family. In 2013, Carmen and the women she worked with making tortillas walked out on the job. They were making 15 Quetzales a day (about $1.75) a day for 12 hours of work. Carmen has lived in the same place for over 50 years.
Although we do not know the story of her absent husband, her son Jorge lives with her. He tries to find work in the fields in the area when it is available, but it is only seasonal work. Roselia (Jorge’s wife) left Jorge and their 4 boys also live with her. While we have attempted to mediate reconciliation between the two, it does not seem to be a possibility. Spiritually, this family needs support. While Carmen is a believer in Jesus, Jorge (and subsequently his boys) are not. We try to encourage them and show Christ’s love whenever we visit. We try to make a point to explain that God is using us to help them in their physical depravity to show them what He can offer them spiritually.
